How to Join
On 7th May 1997, the then Armed Forces Minister, Dr. John Reid, announced during a visit to the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth that the Royal Navy would give formal recognition to the Maritime Volunteer Service. In his remarks, he said that the Royal Navy's recognition is a tribute to the important role that the Maritime Volunteer Service play in the education and training of people in nautical skills.
List A -
The principal MVS list with for members over 18. Members are expected to attend regular
training sessions at their local unit and to take part in occasional week-
List B -
Open to those who have relevant experience and are willing to pass on their knowledge and skills to other members.
List S -
Open to those who feel they are unable give the level of regular commitment required by Lists A and B, but nevertheless wish to play their part in the life of their Unit.
Membership
Active List Volunteers can be Seagoing or Shore based.
Seagoing members train in seamanship, navigation, engineering and communications, go to sea in MVS vessels and take part in exercises ashore and afloat.
Shore based members specialise in communications, training and administrative roles. They are encouraged to go to sea as crew from time to time.
