Brief History of the Maritime Volunteer Service

The MVS was founded upon the disbandment of the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service in 1994 by members of the RNXS who felt there was still a need for a volunteer maritime service to patrol and provide a vital service to maritime and nautical communities like Portsmouth.

The Maritime Volunteer Service is a unique charity in the non-profit sector and having started with nothing but enthusiasm, the Maritime Volunteer Service now has over 400 members in 30 Units around the coasts and estuaries of the United Kingdom. Each unit meets weekly for classroom training which is put into practice afloat on other evenings and at weekends using a range of craft from dories, through launches, powerful RIBs to an offshore training ship.
