Welcome to the website of the East Sussex Unit of
The Maritime Volunteer Service
The Maritime Volunteer Service is a national charity which serves the community by being ready to respond to emergencies such as oil spills and floods, training people of all backgrounds who wish to learn maritime skills, raising public awareness of the vital roles of the Royal Navy, the Shipping and Fishing Industries and UK's Ports, and providing sea experience for youth organisations.
The aim of the MVS is to recruit young adults with an interest in the sea and to help them gain recognised maritime qualifications. MVS Volunteers have the opportunity to progress through a structured training programme. East Sussex Sovereign Harbour Unit has its own team of instructors and examiners and can provide training for youth organisations.
The East Sussex Sovereign Harbour Unit draws its members from all over East Sussex and is based at Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne, where it has a shore base and where the MVS training vessel East Sussex 1 is berthed.
We take part in various exercises with other organisations, including HM Coastguard and provide safety patrols for several events each year, including the RNLI Regatta Weekend.
As well as contributing to a worthwhile cause, membership of the MVS offers the chance to improve seamanship skills and achieve recognised qualifications.
The MVS has its own in-house training scheme but we also run RYA Day Skipper and Power Boat theoretical and practical training courses, and arrange for members to attend other RYA/MCA courses.
The Maritime Volunteer Service is open to people aged 18 or over and is for those interested in the Eastbourne maritime, nautical and naval community.
It can also be seen as the next step for those who wish to try something different or move on from the Sea Cadets, Nautical Training Corps, Sea Scouts/Rangers or the Combined Cadet Force and can also be useful way for former members of the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy to pass on their skills.
We welcome new members to join our three branches:
We are a very respected maritime service formally recognised by the Royal Navy, the Coast Guard, the RNLI and other nautical organisations. In addition, we are one of only a select group of organisations allowed to fly a privileged Red Ensign, also affectionately known as the ‘Red Duster’.
